One doesn't have to be an important person in the art world to comment about a painting. You don't even have to be an art scholar to make a rather intelligent analysis either.
Simply saying "I like this painting because of its vibrant colors and creative use of shapes and varied patterns." is already a form of analyzing the painting as you're describing some of its elements its colors, shapes and patterns.
This does not, however, mean that you can just blurt out why a painting is not good. Remember this because paintings can be very personal items, what you say more often than not reflects something about you rather than the painting!
In general, there are two ways to analyze of an artwork the tangible and the intangible .
Painting Analysis What I SEE
We first read paintings the same way we read people via its physical attributes. First, identify general information about the painting. These details include its title, the artist who created it, when the artwork was created, the medium that was used, and others.
Second, describe the physical attributes of the painting. You may start by identifying the literal objects found on the painting like trees, mountains, bodies of water, etc.
This also includes describing the size or dimension of the painting, as well as its orientation whether it's landscape or portrait.
The last thing to describe about a painting delves on the artistic elements or concepts used by the artist. Among these are the use of lines and shapes, texture, colors, contrast and mood.
Painting Analysis What I FEEL
The second part of the analysis is your personal view and interpretation of the painting. Ask yourself these questions What do I think of this piece of art? Am I able to connect' with it or the artist? Do I want it in MY home?
The last question also helps you define your purpose. For instance, many people think' a painting is nice and even say so, yet when asked if they would like it hanging on their wall at home, the opinion varies!
Here are a few more guide questions that you can ask yourself in assessing your perception of the painting:
If not for home use, would you consider buying it as an art collection?
What do you like about the painting?
What kind of artistic effect do you think can it contribute to a room, yours or otherwise?
You see, there's nothing difficult about analyzing a painting. Reading reviews about an artist and his works may be educational and helpful but they should not dictate your personal perception of an artwork.
Just make sure that you keep an open-mind and be receptive of other people's interpretation of the painting you're looking at. Remember that art in itself is a very social and human experience. It affects each and every one of us in various ways and at many different levels.
Ok, class over Remember the last time you saw a captivating painting or picture that gave you a blissful feeling inside?
Want to capture that feeling anytime? Choose a painting that captures your feelings and hang it in your favorite room and then... watch how your happiness and motivation begins to increases! Pictures stir up feelings!
