Buddha Paintings - The Sacred Art of India

Buddha paintings and Buddhist art, in general, is a major part of the Indian culture. For the Indians, their art is sacred, as it depicts man's continuing search for the meaning of life and is also an expression of his experiences both in the inner and outer world. The Indians' art is bounded by philosophy and religion, and is very dear to the traditional and divine lives of Indians.

The art of Indians symbolizes and expresses their spiritual life. Mysticism is also a great feature of the Indians' art, which shows the noblest and highest aspirations and aims of the Indians for spiritual pursuit.

Buddhist art and paintings, in particular, depict and tell the story of Gautama Siddhartha, who was once a prince but who gave up a wealthy life for a life of poverty while searching for peace and wisdom.

Paintings and sculptures of Buddha are commonly seen in the homes of Indians, as Buddha is well revered and becomes a source of guidance for them.

His life greatly inspires the creators of Buddhist art. Each of the different stages of Buddha's life contributed to the development of this art.

This ensures that the story of the Enlightened One continues to be told and retold throughout the generations of Indians, and ensures that the lessons he has taught continue to live in each one of them.

Buddhist art is not only seen in paintings, sculptures and the like, but is also portrayed in Indians' dances and plays among others. Indeed, Buddhism has played an important role in the lives of many Indians. Buddhist art is not limited to Indians, however, as even people from other cultures have learned to embrace this philosophy, and they, too, have their own counterpart to the Indians' Buddhist art.
