Many painters and artists regard self-portraits art works as their greatest challenge in their careers. The best old master paintings are the self-portraits made by the best painters in history like Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, Jan van Eyck and even the grand master himself, Leonardo Da Vinci.
Sometimes, these great artists paint or draw fictional characters that are really their alter egos. I'm sure you've heard the rumour that the Mona Lisa is really Da Vinci right?
Self Portraits - A Peak INTO the Artist
Indeed, an artist's self portrait reveals much about himself. More to the point, it reveals how the artist sees himself at the time the portrait was done. for instance, many of today's Masters are considered great only NOW. (Van Gogh never sold a painting in his lifetime!) And so a look at some of his self portraits show a brooding artist.
It is also interesting to note that no matter how creative an artists is, his self portraits always seem to be... well, plain. I guess this is that quintessential felling of not lifting one's own seat.
Today, you can have a self portrait done not by yourself but by commissioning an artist. Self portraits are great personal mementos.
If on the other hand, you would rather have self portrait done of your mother, father or others, you can also surprise them by having a self portrait painted by an artist from a picture or photo taken at one point in their lives.
