Heirloom Portraits - Moments in Time

Heirloom portraits have stories to tell. Some Victorian paintings are excellent examples of these artworks and indeed, they do tell us something about that era doesn't it?

Nowadays, you can commission an artist for your own heirloom portrait if you want a great 'snapshot' of yourself, your spouse, or your whole family.

Heirloom Portraits and the Victorian Era

In many Victorian portraits, family members from the royal family and from the House of Lords are seen wearing their jeweled tiaras, crowns, scepters, necklaces, bracelets, and other material possessions. It is also noticeable that the heirs of the noble families are seen wearing or using the same treasures in the following portraits. It has become a sign of true heritage for every noble family to have an heirloom portrait painting of every generation.

It is thus no surprise that when one thinks of heirloom paintings, one thinks of bejeweled ancestors posing stiffly with the purpose of these paintings to be passed on as 'heirlooms' to future generations. This is still practice today but with a more 'down-to-earth' style.

Nowadays, heirloom paintings mean more simple pictures or portraits of your great-great grandparents (minus the tiaras). Heirloom paintings do not only evoke a feeling of how affluent one's ancestors are, but more of how they looked like in ears gone by. It is indeed nice to look at old heirloom paintings and begin to think of how you are connected or related to that person in the picture isn't it?

It may the 21st century now but this era, our generation, will also pass so think of getting some heirloom portraits for your great-great-grandkids too.
