Paintings of Horses the Race of Horses by Edgar Degas
One of the most applauded works of a master was by the French Impressionist Edgar Degas who used light strokes of pastel crayon on canvas to create the illusion of light and shade in a poetry of movement. One of his most famous works about equestrian art is an artwork entitled, "Race of Horses" (c. 1822-1825).
The horse painting is really about several jockeys in a race. The three horses stand out as they are pressed against each other, with nostrils flaring and hooves lifted off the ground. They are a fine example of Degas' excellent use of color and gentle strokes to create the movement reminiscent of watching, as if in person, the horse race. Art prints of equestrian nature can also be found in numerous reprints, and even modern art.
Horses are powerful creatures and many a boardroom have horse paintings on their walls to convey the strength and power of a business or of a particular executive.
