Huichol Yarn Paintings  - An Ancient Art Form

Creating Huichol yarn paintings is an ancient art form that evolved from another form of stone art called Nierkias. It is done by attaching yarn to a piece of copali or other kinds of wood. Trees are cut and flattened into boards, after which wax is softened onto the wood using the natural heat of the sun. Wool yarn is then layered into designs over these boards.

Huichol yarn artworks are the pride and joy of a group of Mexican natives called the Huichol. They were originally created by medicine men called maraakame, as well as some individual artists through vision quests and are thus deemed to be sacred being a ritual art.

However, due to economic reasons, they have learned to somehow "commodify" the said art form that they are now being mass-produced through assembly lines in factories and sold in the Internet.

Though a huichol yarn painting created from a factory may be a lot more pricey than the former, it is said that those created by the medicine men and individual artists may be of more value as they are created with materials that are considered sacred, such as peyote and copali trees.

Also, they are more likely to be truly unique as these yarn paintings were created out of their vision quests and not from a scanned image stored in a design database of the art factory.

Either way, owning a huichol yarn painting is a nice way of experiencing the rich cultural and religious heritage of Mexicans and simply a beautiful artistic creation worth having.
