An artist's choice of subject is primarily influenced by his choice of medium. Choosing the right medium is necessary to effectively convey the artist's message – be it abstract or glaringly obvious. You can't effectively show a landscape image with a free-standing sculpture. A good painting subject can be derived from old landscape paintings and information on its cultural application can prove to be quite interesting reading.
In fact, some very famous, fine art works have captured the essence of the land, as can be seen in the works of Monet, Seurat and Gaugin. Landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes are just some of the favorite subjects of new artists, since it is something that they have personally experienced. Artists find a connection with their physical environment and this can be clearly seen in all cultures around the world.
Since ancient times, landscape paintings have been found in Chinese and Japanese cultures. Asians are very perceptive of nature and constantly meditate on the wonders of the earth. The paintings of landscapes never changes but it can be represented in various ways. In Europe, famous paintings of pure landscapes began in the Renaissance, a time when artists began to discover their natural environment. In modern times, fine art has found its way in landscaped paintings, as can be seen in Picasso, Warhol and Malang.
While the value of a famous or fine piece of art is not dependent on the artist's choice of subject, a commonly accepted theme among a general audience helps give the fine art its noteworthy praise.
