How to Create Ocean Oil Paintings

Ocean oil paintings are popular with people who love the sea. Seascape and nautical paintings can be those that reflect life by the ocean or anything related to it.

Some oil paintings are of the sea alone, others are of fishermen on their boats out on the sea, while others are paintings of fish and other animals found in the great waters.

Ocean artworks can also evoke various emotions as a painter tries to capture its various moods.

A soft tranquil sea can instill peace, while towering waves can evoke adventure, danger or the unpredictable forces of Mother Nature.

Want to try your hand at creating ocean paintings?

1. Visit the beach and work using Nature as your focus point. If this is not possible, get a favorite ocean picture or photo and use this.

2. Sketch the ocean using pencil. Choose the colors you want to use and add the first layer of paint.

3. Start blending your colors and applying it on canvas. Remember that oil paint takes a longer time to dry than other kinds of paint.

4. Begin applying color to water depending on the direction of the surface. Give special attention to transparencies and to surf on the waves. Of course the darkness' of colors depends on the mood you want the ocean painting to convey.
