Should Nazi Theme Oil Paintings be Banned?

Internet auction sites have tried to stop the sale of Nazi memorabilia such as Nazi theme oil paintings, Nazi uniforms, and items bearing the swastika symbol which is currently so heavily identified with the Nazis.

There are several reasons why people feel that Nazi-themed paintings and military arts prints should not be sold.

For one, many believe that selling and buying Nazi memorabilia means the condoning of war crimes. Another reason is that these paintings, prints and other such Nazi-related items are all insensitive to Holocaust victims and survivors.

But should they really be banned? Even now, thousands of items, including paintings by Hitler himself, continue to be traded.

In fact, even the US army owns paintings by Hitler and is still fighting a 20-year-old legal battle to keep them. Further, some items that people commonly relate to Nazism are suffering from this attempt to ban their sale.

For instance, the swastika belonged to many different cultures before the Nazis of Germany adopted it. In fact, the word swastika is a Sanskrit word meaning "conducive to well- being".
