Mexican Oil Paintings and Frida Kahlo

Perhaps the world of Mexican oil paintings and folk art will not be the same without controversial artist Frida Kahlo.

Frida was of Indian ancestry on her mother's side and of Hungarian-Jewish descent on her father side. However, this was never a problem.

In fact, her husband, Mexican painter Diego Rivera, is even cited as to capitalize on this by marketing Frida as authentic, unspoiled and primitive', emphasizing the Indian aspects of her heritage during a time in Mexico when pre-Hispanic Mexican history and culture was the trend.

Frida started painting while recovering from a terrible accident that will leave her permanently disabled. In fact, her approximately 200 paintings relate to her feelings of physical pain one way or the other.

She often made self portraits where she always wore Mexican clothes. In most artworks, she surrounds herself often with her pets and her oil painting Self Portrait with Monkey is one of her famous artworks.

Other popular original oil paintings include Frida Kahlo Self Portrait with Loose Hair, Frida Kahlo a Few Small Nips, The Two Fridas, and more.
