How to Care for Acrylic Paintings

Acrylic paintings are a part of permanent collections of museums and art galleries. But what IS acrylic paint and why do artists use this medium?

It is water soluble paint that dries up quickly. It's used by many painters instead of oil because it dries fast (some dry in seconds!).

Acrylic paint has been used in modern abstract artwork as well as other paintings but because of its unique characteristics, different techniques apply to ensure that your acrylic artwork lasts.

Preventative care is of course the best for an acrylic painting but below are some guidelines on how to care for your acrylic painting.

Acrylic artworks are actually soft' at room temperature. As this state, the painting holds' dust and dirt; the best way to slow down the collection of dirt is to have the painting well framed.

As implied, acrylic artworks are sensitive to heat. As such, keep them away from direct sunlight, directly above your fire place, or any room where the temperature ventures around 60 C and above. Another reason to prevent placing acrylic artworks in humid places is because it promotes mold growth.

If after all these precautions your acrylic painting is fading its colors. It is highly likely that the paint used was of inferior quality.
