A Brief History of Modern Mexican Paintings

Modern Mexican paintings were made popular by mural painters from Mexico . Because the Mexican culture is so beautifully diverse, so are its artworks .

From elaborate desert scene oil paintings to simple cactus (or other plant or flower ) drawings, Mexico is rich in art subjects.

Mexican muralist Diego Rivera worked toward creating a national Mexican style that reflected the history of Mexico as well as the socialist spirit of the Mexican Revolution of the early 1900's. Rivera's mural style influenced artists in Mexico and the United States.

His artwork combined folklore elements of traditional Mexican art with dramatic realism. Frida Kahlo , who was married to Diego Rivera, was another influential Mexican painter of the 1930's.

Her paintings were mostly autobiographical and she painted many self-portraits (55 to be exact). If you're just bit more familiar with Kahlo , it's probably because a movie has been made about her life starring Salma Hayek.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) - was a Mexican painter known for her revealing self-portraits. She married the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera in 1929. Her self-portraits reflect her physical and emotional suffering. Her paintings also carried a lot of female themes making her known as a sort of feminist cult figure in the art world.

Diego Rivera (1886-1957) - became famous for murals that portrayed Mexican life and history. Rivera was a controversial figure because of his political beliefs and his known disagreements with church and clergy policies'.

He began to dabble in fresco paintings on large walls where he soon developed his own style of large, simplified figures and bold colors.

Some of his best murals are in the National Palace in Mexico City and at the National Agricultural School in Chapingo, near Mexico City.
