The Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci, is one of the greatest painters of all time. Leonardo da Vinci paintings , such as the Mona Lisa , and his religious painting The Last Supper, which was painted on a large wall ( 15x29 feet to be exact!) are but two of the most famous paintings not only of the Renaissance period of the world.
Leonardo daVinci concentrated on what he thought was a scientific and rational approach to art. He was also interested in conveying a lot of emotion or feelings with his art. Let's take a look at the two paintings mentioned above.
The Last Supper This painting shows the final meal of Jesus Christ and His twelve apostles. Jesus has just announced that one of his apostles will betray Him.
The scene is on a wall of the dining room in the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. Leonardo changed the traditional arrangement of the figures in the painting. Christ and His apostles are usually shown in a line, with Judas set apart in some way.
He painted the apostles in several small groups. Jesus is seated in the center, apart from the apostles. Da Vinci's composition creates a more active and centralized design than other artists had achieved. Unfortunately, soon after daVinci completed the painting, the paint began to flake away.
The Last Supper still exists but is in poor condition. But if you want to see a reproduction, don't fret; there are hundreds that can be viewed on the Internet.
Mona Lisa This painting is probably the most famous portrait in the history of art. The painting shows a young woman seated on a balcony above a landscape. Leonardo da Vinci used a pyramid design to place the woman in the space of the painting.
The light da Vinci used gives the living surfaces a geometry of spheres and circles, which includes the arc of her world famous smile.
The painting hangs in the Louvre museum in Paris. So is the Mona Lisa daVince in disguise? Perhaps, we'll never know
