There may be no absolute rule or set of directions when it comes to painting abstract art. When taking lessons in abstract painting, one would learn the myriad styles that are used as well as the different steps in producing a particular artwork on canvas.
There are a variety of schools or styles which one can choose to follow or emulate when dealing with abstract art. But why would you want to follow what other people have done?
One reason could be that you were deeply moved by a particular abstract painting done in acrylic, encouraging you to use the same. One can also be easily influenced by the directions and steps in painting that are given by those who are teaching us.
But do keep this in mind - abstract art is often defined as the expression of our subconscious thoughts and ideas. As such a painting should be able to convey a connection to its painter from the start.
This should be the most important thing regardless of whether you had followed the steps and directions stated when painting in the styles of Cubism, Futurism or Neoplasticism.
When creating abstract artwork, a number of criticisms might be thrown at your work for being exceedingly deviant from the accepted styles.
Still, the opportunity to be able to express yourself truthfully through abstract painting should weigh more. And if you truly believe your work is beautiful, then time is the only other factor before others recognize is as well.
