Most pet owners like having portraits of their pets. Pet portraits are not limited to photographs but are sometimes animal drawings, or portraits done in oil, pastel or watercolor.
The most important quality of animal portraits is that the picture shows personality.
What aren't good portraits are stiff, posed portraits such as a Chihuahua winning a dog show. A fun photograph of pets makes great animal portraits.
The best portraits are of pets in their environment and in the middle of regular activities.
Below are tips for getting great portraits of your pets such as your poodle or pit-bull dog, your Persian or Siamese cat or even your rabbit.
Tip no. 1: Try not to draw attention to yourself by quietly creeping up to your dog or cat when taking their photograph.
Tip no. 2: The problem with making a dog or cat pose for portraits is keeping them still. Some dogs can pose well but cats are a bigger problem. Placing a cat or dog on a table can help because they hesitate before jumping off.
Tip no. 3: To get a pets attention for portraits, food and toys can be used. Objects are held next to the camera lens so it seems like your pit-bull, Chihuahua, bulldog or Siamese cat is looking straight at the camera. However, using food with a dog can backfire if a bulldog starts drooling or gets excited.
Tip no. 4: Have someone to help you out.
Tip no. 5: To get good portraits, place the camera at about the same level as your pet. Get on your hands and knees go eye-to-eye with your rabbit, for example, although not all portraits have to be at this angle.
