A List of Artists Popular For Their Abstract Oil Paintings

Abstract expressionism flourished in America during the mid 1940's and mid-1950's. Imaginative abstract artists developed a revolutionary approach to the nature and purpose of painting and influenced art in many countries.

The abstract movement was more a philosophical attitude than a particular style. Abstract oil paintings by famous artists are admired and recognized worldwide.

All the recognized abstract artists believed that the figurative and abstract traditions of modern art could be used freely to express feelings and attitude toward life.

They believed that no matter how abstract their paintings appeared, there was always an underlying serious subject. The genius of abstract artists is in their rejection of customs and rules of earlier art.

They didn't paint traditional pictures but instead, abstract artists emphasized color, paint, and the character of large paintings. Below is a short list of recognized and admired abstract artists.

1. Jackson Pollock Pollock is recognized as one of the most famous abstract artists. Critics called Pollock and other abstract artists action painters because of a technique where paint is splattered onto canvas.

2. Willem de Kooning ,- de Kooning was a leading abstract expressionist artist. He's known for his hectic and violent paintings of lunging brushstrokes and swirling paint patterns.

3. Helen Frankenthaler Frankenthaler, an American abstract artist, developed a technique called soak-stain. By pouring very thin paint directly onto raw canvas, the canvas absorbed the paint and stained it with color. Texture was eliminated and the flatness in the canvas surface was emphasized.

4. Adolph Gottlieb - Gottlieb was a leading American abstract artist. He is known for paintings that he called "bursts." These paintings feature a moon-like or sun-like globe above a jagged, harsh-looking mass of bold paint strokes.
