When we talk of renaissance paintings, we probably cannot help but mention the Mona Lisa painting by da Vinci during the course of the conversation.
Why are we so enamored by such an old painting ? Could we name any other antique oil painting which is equally famous?
By another Master perhaps, such as the paintings of Raphael who is undoubtedly famous for such work as the Castiglione and The Holy Family.
The Renaissance was the time which immediately followed the medieval period. This was a far cry from the era which preceded it as there existed a wide clamor for education, progress and search for knowledge.
It was also a time when painting would flourish, as an artist could render an old medieval fresco on a wall, but many, like da Vinc , would paint on a canvas. Artists, during this time, were inspired in painting realistic portrayals of the things around them.
They were also inclined to study old works by the Greeks as well as the Romans. Indeed, being termed a Renaissance man in the present could mean that you have a zeal for collecting knowledge.
Leonardo da Vinci was such a man. He had such an imagination and a keen mind that he had sketches of a flying contraption and a digging machine, to name a few, contained in his old notebook.
Upon observing a Renaissance painting, we might be able to see how the thirst for self-expression had been slaked in the artist. It could also help us recall a critical point in history when man had decided to take courageous steps towards his future.
