Art Tip 111: Painting Frames - Seek and Ye Shall Find
Painting frames need not be expensive at all. Search bazaars, garage sales, and flea markets for the perfect frame to be used for your antique or old paintings. You can also go online and see discount stores, art craft stores or even check out e-commerce sites where antique frames are being auctioned off.
Finding the right picture frame is half the fun! By the way, since you are saving on the frames, spend a little on professionally cut-to-fit white mats.
Art Tip 112: Painting Frames and Holiday Decor
The holidays are very festive moments indeed but be mindful of the decoration you wish hang or use around paintings. For instance, fresh flowers and live berries may stain and damage frames and the artwork it is encasing.
Further, these live' ornaments attract pests that may nest in your prized artworks. So the next time you decide to use leaves and fruit as holiday decor, think again if you have artwork that needs to be protected.
Art Tip 113: The Dizzying Array of Art Prints
One look at art prints online and you are met with a dizzying array of topics and themes. The best art print is of course the one that catches your fancy.
Are you a sports enthusiast? If so, art prints centered on skiing, basketball or any other sport may be your thing.
Into the Old Masters but cannot afford the original (who can anyway?), then get an art print of famous works by Rembrandt, Monet, et al. online and be in the company of the Masters too.
Art Tip 114: Wall Decor - Arranging Pieces
Don't over decorate your wall with too many art prints or paintings. For one, it will only create a sort of chaos on your wall when what you really want to do is create an artistic focal point.
You want people to look at the wall and for them stop to admire the art pieces and not to glance at your wall and say "Whoa!" As such, it is also important to have art pieces that complement each other.
Art Tip 115: Wall Decor - Arranging Pieces II
When using paintings or art prints as wall decor, use a central theme. For instance, don't put landscapes next to family paintings! That just does not make sense. Further, not only doe sit not complement each other but actually diminishes the value' of all the artworks.
Using the right frames for your wall decorating efforts is important too. Even if you have the same painting themes but if you have frames that do not match, the effect is destroyed.
Art Tip 116: Old Paintings - Handle with Care
Old paintings should be cleaned routinely but be extremely careful that you do not bump the painting as the slightest bump can cause the cracking of paint on old paintings. If you have an old painting that serves as family heirloom that you cannot afford to have destroyed, it's best to seek professional cleaners who are properly equipped and trained to clean different types of paintings.
Art Tip 117: Old Paintings - Holy Smoke!
We often see scenes of old paintings in bar rooms where men play billiards, card games and smoke cigars. But those things are indeed best kept in movies and not something you should adopt at home.
Old paintings are already 'sensitive'. As such, they should not be placed in areas where there is a lot of smoke either form cigars, candles or the fireplace to prevent soot and nicotine from accumulating on the painting's surface.
Art Tip 118: Winter Family Portraits and the Cozy Fireplace
Winter family portraits are great to hang in the living room for all to admire but please do not place them above a fireplace. Like all paintings, changes in room temperature contribute to a family painting's rapid deterioration.
Actually, anywhere near a fireplace is probably one of the worst places to hang a painting because of the changing temperatures caused by the chimney and the fireplace itself. So if you value that painting, keep it away from your fireplace.
Art Tip 119: Cat Paintings - Selecting Frames
If you have a cat painting just waiting to be hanged on your wall, select a frame that suits the cat in the painting. Many people try to focus on the overall' look or color of the painting rather than just the beautiful and nice hues of the cat's coat so they end up picking the wrong frame.
Just remember this - the cat, the color of your your wall and the picture frame should be your main focus.
Art Tip 120: Cat Paintings - Preparing your Cat
Cats can be REALLY active and so cat paintings can take forever to be done. One idea is to take snapshots of your cat and then select the one you like for the painter to do. If, however, you prefer the traditional way then prepare your cat for the painting session.
Bring items that your cat is familiar with so he doesn't freak out in new surroundings. Also, bring the cat to the painter's studio often a week before the painting session, again for familiarity.
