We've all heard that paintings should be kept out of the sun when displayed and placed in acid-free paper when stored. But this is just preserving the painting AFTER you've purchased it.
The condition of the painting just before you bought it equally matters. Thus, when purchasing paintings, check the quality of the paint, linen and canvas used. Has the canvas been stretched too much over a wooden frame that there's tension? On the other, hand if the painting you wish to purchase is on paper, did the framer use acid-free mounts?
Art Tip 52: Paintings are Personal Things...
One's choice of paintings reveals a lot about one's character. Unless you buy paintings purely for investment, you probably buy paintings because you liked it in one form or another. Most of the time, a person will buy a painting because it appeals personally to him or her. Keeping that in mind, think twice of where you want to place very personal artwork pieces. Paintings specifically for the bedroom may not be received well if you place it in the living room where it is there for all to see. Even if you think that it is 'tasteful', visiting friends with children may not think so.

Most paintings in the living room are placed above the couch for the simple reason that it occupies the area with the biggest wall space. The tendency, however, is to place the painting too high (in an attempt to try and keep the paintings out of reach). Unfortunately, doing so will not give the 'best view' of a painting. The rule of thumb is to hang your artwork just 8 to 10 inches above the sofa.

Thinking of hanging that great new painting of yours in the living room but not sure how high or low it should be? Most houses have ceilings of 8 to 10 feet and more often than not, people place paintings on top of a couch or living room drawer. In these cases, position the painting just a little bit lower than the center between the ceiling and the top of the object from which the painting should be placed.

Sometimes, our love for paintings surpasses the wall space we have for them. But don't fret; who says that only a single painting can adorn a wall. Why not try a technique called salon hanging? In this technique, you can hang paintings from the floor to the ceiling; pretty much like what's done in galleries. However, don't start hanging paintings on the wall for no reason. Find a common element amongst the paintings, group them, and THEN start hanging.
